How to use

Your device has (at least) two IP addresses, and the difference explains most confusion. The private IP (usually 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) identifies your device on your local network only, your router assigned it, and the wider internet never sees it. The public IP is what your ISP assigned to your connection. Every website you visit sees this address, shared by every device behind your router through NAT.
Why you would look it up: verifying a VPN is actually working (your public IP should change to the VPN server's, if this page still shows your ISP's address, the VPN is leaking). Giving an administrator your address for a firewall or database allowlist. Setting up port forwarding or a home server, or checking whether your ISP has rotated your address, which most home connections do periodically ('dynamic IP'). If a service whitelisted your IP and access broke a week later, a rotated dynamic IP is the usual culprit, ask your ISP about static addressing if it keeps happening.
On mobile networks your public IP is shared with many users through carrier-grade NAT and can change between requests, which is why IP-based allowlisting is unreliable from phones.

Why is this IP different from the one in my device settings?
Device settings show your private LAN address (192.168.x.x), which exists only inside your network. This page shows the public address your router presents to the internet, the one websites and allowlists care about.
Does my IP change over time?
On most home and mobile connections, yes, ISPs assign dynamic addresses that rotate on reconnection or on a schedule. Static IPs are typically a paid business add-on. If a service whitelisted your IP and stopped working, check whether it changed.
How do I verify my VPN is working?
Check this page before and after connecting. Working VPN: the IP and location change to the VPN endpoint. If your real ISP still shows, the VPN is not routing your traffic (or is leaking).
Can someone find my home from my IP?
No, geolocation resolves to a city-level estimate at best, usually your ISP's regional infrastructure. Only your ISP can map an address to a subscriber, and that requires legal process.
