Is an AI Course Worth It in 2026? An Honest Checklist for Indian Students
A generative AI course is worth it if it makes you build and deploy several real projects, gives you feedback from people who have shipped AI systems, teaches tools that are current in 2026, and costs less than the time you would lose learning alone. It is not worth it if it mainly sells a certificate, a "guaranteed" placement or recorded videos covering what official documentation already teaches. Use the 10 point checklist below to judge any AI or AI/ML course before you pay.
This guide does not rank or name course providers. Good and weak programmes exist at every price, and the right one depends on how you learn. Instead, you get the questions that separate them, the red flags to watch for, a map for learning by building on your own, and a build-first path that costs under ₹500 in AI usage, so you can test whether you even need a course.
- 10: questions to ask before you pay for any AI course, with what a good and a weak answer sound like

Is a generative AI course worth it in 2026?
Demand for applied AI skills is real. Naukri's JobSpeak shows AI/ML roles grew 20% year on year in September 2026, and AI/ML roles for freshers in IT grew 19%, while overall fresher hiring grew just 1%. That gap is why so many AI courses are being sold. But recruiters hire for what you can build, not for what you have watched, so the value of a course depends almost entirely on how much it makes you build.
Worth it when: You need structure and feedback. You have tried learning alone and stalled, you want deadlines and a cohort, and the course has experienced mentors who review your code and projects. You can afford it without debt that would stress you for years.
Not worth it when: You are buying a promise. The main selling point is a certificate, a salary figure or a placement guarantee, the syllabus is mostly theory or videos, or you would be paying with a loan you do not fully understand.
The 10 point checklist for any AI course
Ask the course counsellor these questions directly, and ask to see evidence. A good programme will answer them easily.
10 questions to ask before you pay
Count the good answers. Seven or more is a strong sign. Four or fewer, keep looking.
| # | Question | Good answer | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | How many projects will I build and deploy? | Several, with at least one deployed and one using your own data | "Capstone" means a single guided notebook |
| 2 | Who reviews my code, and how often? | Named mentors with industry experience, regular written feedback | Only automated quizzes or a doubt forum |
| 3 | When was the syllabus last updated? | Within the last few months, covers RAG, agents, tool use and evaluation | Can't say, or it stops at basic prompting |
| 4 | Can I see the first module before paying? | Yes, a trial week or sample lessons | Payment first, access later |
| 5 | What do learners actually build? Can I see examples? | Links to real learner repositories and live apps | Only testimonials and salary screenshots |
| 6 | Who teaches, and what have they shipped? | Instructors with public work you can check | Vague "industry experts" with no names |
| 7 | How much hands-on API and model access is included? | You call real models from code from week one | Mostly slides and no-code demos |
| 8 | What exactly does placement support mean? | Clear description: mock interviews, referrals, resume reviews, with written terms | "Guaranteed placement" without written conditions |
| 9 | What is the refund policy, in writing? | A clear window and conditions you can read before paying | "No refunds" or terms only after payment |
| 10 | What is the total cost, including financing? | One clear price, financing terms shown upfront | Hidden loan, interest or "zero cost EMI" you do not understand |
Red flags to watch for
Whatever the price or brand, these patterns are reasons to pause:
Do: Before you pay
- Talk to two past learners you find yourself, not ones the sales team picks
- Read the refund policy and any loan agreement in full
- Try the first module or a trial week
- Compare the syllabus with the openly available official docs of the tools it teaches
- Check that you can afford it without stress if no job follows quickly
Avoid: Pressure tactics
- "Offer ends tonight" discounts and countdown timers
- Salary or placement promises without written terms
- Loans signed on a call before you have read the document
- Courses that say you will not need fundamentals or coding
- Certificates presented as the main outcome
Is an AI ML course worth it, or a generative AI course?
These are different paths, and many students mix them up. Machine learning courses teach how models are trained: statistics, linear algebra, classic algorithms, deep learning. Generative AI courses teach how to build products on top of existing large models: APIs, prompts, RAG, agents, evaluation. Both lead to jobs, but different ones.
| If this is you | Best fit |
|---|---|
| You enjoy maths and want to train or fine tune models Research, ML engineering, data science | AI/ML course Check depth in maths and experiments |
| You want to build apps and products with AI Software, product, startups | Generative AI or AI engineering Check how much you build and deploy |
| You are not sure yet First or second year student | Build first, decide later Try the ₹500 path below |

What people ask about AI courses on Reddit and student forums
Searches for "is AI course worth it reddit" usually come from people who want unsponsored opinions. The questions that come up again and again are useful to answer for yourself: Did past learners get interviews because of the course or because of their own projects? Could the syllabus be learned from documentation and practice? Was the mentoring real? Is the certificate recognised by the companies you want to join? Treat any single post as one person's experience, positive or negative, and look for patterns across many.
Learn by building: a self-study map
If you are disciplined, you can cover most of a generative AI syllabus on your own. These resources are well established and the official documentation is open to read. The order matters more than the source.
What to learn, where, and what to build at each stage
About 8 to 10 weeks at 10 hours a week
| Stage | Learn from | Build |
|---|---|---|
| Python and APIs | Official Python tutorial, NPTEL programming courses on SWAYAM | A script that calls a public API and saves results |
| Calling LLMs | Model provider docs and the OpenAI Cookbook on GitHub | A summariser that returns JSON and logs cost per request |
| RAG | Vector database docs, our production RAG tutorial | A chatbot over your notes with citations and a 20 question test |
| Agents and tools | MCP documentation, our MCP explainer | An agent that uses two tools safely |
| Deep learning basics | fast.ai, the Hugging Face course | Fine tune a small model on a classification task |
| Evaluation and cost | Our guide on evaluating models on your own tasks | Compare two models on accuracy and ₹ per answer |
The build-first path: five projects under ₹500
Before paying for a course, spend a month building. If you finish these five projects, you may not need a course. If you get stuck, you will know exactly what kind of help to pay for.
- Project 1: summariser. Turn college notices or articles into JSON summaries. Skill: API calls and structured output.
- Project 2: notes chatbot. Answer questions from your notes with citations. Skill: RAG.
- Project 3: classifier. Label scam SMS or reviews and measure accuracy. Skill: evaluation.
- Project 4: agent. An expense or timetable agent with an MCP server. Skill: tool use.
- Project 5: deployed app. Polish one project for a real user and put it online. Skill: shipping.
Five projects × 500 calls × (3,000 input × ₹19.47 + 600 output × ₹52.26) ÷ 1,000,000 = ₹224 on DeepSeek V4 Flash
Leaves room for some calls to a stronger model and still stays under ₹500

Disclosure: Velona is our product. Here is how we approached this guide. Velona sells API access to AI models, not courses, and we have no paid relationship with any course provider. We do not rank or name courses. The checklist is our synthesis of what makes learning stick: building, feedback and current content. The ₹224 estimate uses Velona list prices on 30 October 2026 and the usage stated. Any provider works for the build-first path.
If you do take a course, get the most from it
- Build beyond the assignments. Change every guided project so it uses your own data or solves your own problem.
- Publish as you go. Push code to GitHub weekly and deploy at least one project.
- Use mentors for judgement, not syntax. Ask why a design is better, not how to fix a typo.
- Keep the certificate in perspective. List it on your resume, but lead with projects and results.
Frequently asked questions
Is a generative AI course worth it?
It is worth it if it makes you build and deploy several real projects, gives regular feedback from experienced mentors, teaches current tools such as RAG, agents and evaluation, and is affordable for you. It is not worth it if it mainly offers a certificate, a placement promise or videos you could learn from documentation.
Is an AI ML course worth it for Indian students?
An AI/ML course is worth it if you enjoy maths and want to work on training and evaluating models, and the course goes deep on statistics, experiments and projects. If you want to build products with existing AI models, a generative AI or AI engineering path is a better fit.
Do recruiters care about AI certificates?
Certificates help a little, mainly to pass resume filters. Recruiters care much more about projects you can demonstrate, code they can read and results you can explain. A deployed project with a clear README usually outweighs a certificate.
Can I learn AI without paying for a course?
Yes. Official documentation, open university courses such as NPTEL, fast.ai and the Hugging Face course cover most of the material. What you still pay for is model usage when you build, which is about ₹224 for five projects in our estimate at Velona prices as of 30 October 2026.
What are red flags in an AI course?
Guaranteed placement or salary promises without written terms, pressure to pay today, loans signed before you read the agreement, no trial access, syllabi that skip coding and fundamentals, and testimonials without any links to real learner projects.
How long does it take to learn generative AI?
With basic Python, about 8 to 10 weeks at 10 hours a week is enough to build and deploy a RAG app and a simple agent. Becoming job ready takes longer and depends on how many real projects you finish and how well you can explain them.
