Are You Overpaying for AI? The Real Monthly Cost of AI in India (₹ Math, 2026)
Most people pay a flat monthly fee for AI and never check how much of it they use. We looked at real numbers: what AI plans cost in India today, what a single message really costs when you pay per use, and where the line sits between the two. For most people, the answer is a surprise.
₹0.16
Average cost of one real chat message on a budget model
₹1.66
The same message on a top frontier model
40/day
Frontier messages you need before a ₹1,999 plan pays off
Your free AI plan may be about to start charging
Over the past year, millions of people in India got AI plans free or at a steep discount through launch offers, telecom bundles and student deals. Many of those offers ran for 12 months and renew at the full price unless you cancel. If you signed up around November last year, check your renewal date and your UPI AutoPay or card mandates now.
Before you let a plan renew, it is worth asking a simple question: how much AI do you actually use?
What AI plans cost in India right now
Consumer AI plans in India have settled into three clear price tiers. Prices below are monthly, in rupees, as announced publicly by the major providers.
| Tier | Price per month | What you typically get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget plans | ₹199 to ₹399 | Higher limits than free, limited access to the best models |
| Premium plans | ₹1,950 to ₹2,399 | Top models with usage caps that reset every few hours |
| Power plans | ₹11,999 to ₹24,500 | Much higher caps, aimed at professionals |
Introductory offers bring some budget plans down to ₹199 for the first months. Not every premium plan accepts UPI. Some rupee-priced plans still take only cards or app-store billing.
A premium plan costs about ₹24,000 a year. That is a real expense for a student or an indie developer, so it is worth checking what you would pay per use instead.
What one AI message actually costs
AI models charge by the token, roughly three quarters of a word. Every message sends your question plus the earlier conversation (input), and gets an answer back (output). To keep this real, we looked at 44 anonymised chat requests on Velona. The median request sent about 3,000 input tokens and got back about 1,000 output tokens. That is a normal back-and-forth with a few turns of history.
Cost per message
One typical chat message, in rupees
3,000 input tokens plus 1,000 output tokens, at Velona rupee rates
Budget model · ₹27 in, ₹81 out per 1M tokens
Mid-tier model · ₹130 in, ₹1,036 out per 1M tokens
Frontier model · ₹207 in, ₹1,036 out per 1M tokens
A budget model is about 10 times cheaper per message than a frontier model. For everyday questions, summaries and drafts, most people cannot tell the difference.
Your monthly bill, for three kinds of users
Now multiply by real usage. We modelled three people over a 30-day month and three ways of paying per use: always using a budget model, always using a frontier model, and a smart mix where 80% of messages go to a budget model and the hard 20% go to a frontier model.

Casual · about 10 messages a day
Student · about 25 messages a day
Power user · about 80 messages a day

| User | Budget only | Smart mix | Frontier only | Premium plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casual 10 messages a day | ₹49 | ₹138 | ₹497 | ₹1,999 |
| Student 25 messages a day | ₹122 | ₹346 | ₹1,243 | ₹1,999 |
| Power user 80 messages a day | ₹389 | ₹1,107 | ₹3,978 | ₹1,999 |
Three things stand out:
- Casual users are overpaying the most. At 10 messages a day, a smart mix costs about ₹138 a month. A premium plan costs ₹1,999.
- Students land in the middle. At 25 messages a day, the smart mix costs about ₹346, less than a fifth of a premium plan.
- Heavy frontier users should keep their plan. At 80 frontier messages a day, pay-as-you-go costs about ₹3,978. A premium plan is the better deal there.
The break-even chart
Here is the whole picture on one chart. Each line shows your monthly pay-as-you-go bill as your daily usage grows. Where a line crosses a dashed plan price, the subscription starts to win.

Messages per day
The budget-only line stays under ₹399 until about 82 messages a day, and under ₹1,999 until about 411 a day.
Read it like this. If you use a frontier model for fewer than about 40 messages a day, paying per use beats a ₹1,999 plan. With a smart mix, you can send about 144 messages a day before a premium plan wins. Very few people do that every single day.
The catch: long chats get expensive
Pay-as-you-go has one trap you need to know about. An AI model has no memory between messages. Every time you reply, the app sends the whole conversation so far again as input. So the longer a chat gets, the more each new message costs.
Here is a real example from one anonymised session on Velona, using a budget model. Over 27 turns, the conversation grew from about 24K to 86K tokens, and the cost of each turn tripled.
Real session
Cost of each turn in one long conversation
27 turns, budget model, rupees per turn
Turn number
The whole session cost ₹50. The same session on a frontier model would have cost roughly ₹338. When the same person started a fresh chat, the next turn cost just ₹0.36.
This is why the smart mix works so well, and why a few habits matter:
- Start a new chat for a new topic. A fresh chat resets the cost per message.
- Do not paste whole documents twice. Paste once, ask several questions in one message.
- Use the expensive model for the hard step only. Draft and explore on a budget model. Switch up for the final answer.
- Set a spending cap. A cap stops a long session from surprising you.
When a subscription is the better deal
Pay-as-you-go is not always cheaper. Keep a subscription if any of these describe you:
- You use a frontier model heavily every day, roughly 40 or more messages, on most days of the month.
- You rely on voice mode, image generation or deep research features that a plan bundles in.
- You want one predictable bill and do not want to think about usage at all.
- Your plan is still free or heavily discounted. Use it until the offer ends.
The simple rule
Pay per use. Even always using a frontier model costs less than a ₹399 plan.
Pay per use with a smart mix. You will typically spend ₹111 to ₹553 a month instead of ₹1,999.
A premium plan is probably worth it, as long as you really use it most days.
Most people sit in the first two rows. They use AI in short bursts: a few questions on a weekday, a lot during exams or a deadline, almost nothing on a holiday. A flat plan charges the same in every one of those months.
Try pay-as-you-go without a card
Velona gives you hundreds of AI models, from budget to frontier, in one chat and one API, priced in rupees. You top up a wallet with UPI, RuPay, a domestic card or net banking, starting from ₹10, and every message shows its exact rupee cost in your usage dashboard. New accounts get free starter credit to test it first.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the cheapest way to use AI in India?
For most people, paying per use on a budget model is the cheapest option. A typical chat message costs about ₹0.16, so 10 messages a day comes to about ₹49 a month. Free tiers are cheaper still, but they limit which models you can use and how much.
Is pay-as-you-go cheaper than an AI subscription?
Usually, unless you are a heavy daily user. With a frontier model, pay-as-you-go stays below a ₹1,999 plan until about 40 messages a day. With a smart mix of budget and frontier models, it stays below until about 144 messages a day.
How much does one AI message cost in rupees?
A typical chat message of about 3,000 input and 1,000 output tokens costs about ₹0.16 on a budget model and about ₹1.66 on a top frontier model. Long conversations cost more per message, because the whole history is sent again each time.
Can I pay for AI with UPI?
Some AI plans accept UPI, and some rupee-priced plans still accept only cards or app-store billing. Velona accepts UPI for every top-up, starting from ₹10, with no international card needed.
What is the cheapest AI subscription in India?
Budget plans start at around ₹199 to ₹399 a month, often with introductory offers. They usually limit access to the strongest models. If you mainly want occasional access to a top model, paying per use often costs less than any plan.
How we calculated this
Message size comes from the median of 44 anonymised chat requests on Velona: about 3,000 input and 1,000 output tokens. Budget-model rates of about ₹27 per 1M input tokens and ₹81 per 1M output tokens are the effective rates seen in real Velona usage. Frontier and mid-tier rates are Velona list prices in rupees. Subscription prices come from public announcements by AI providers in India. All figures exclude caching discounts and were checked on 12 October 2026. Prices change often, so check the models page for live rates.
