ChatGPT UPI Payment Not Working? Every Fix, and Other Ways to Pay for AI
A ChatGPT UPI payment usually fails for one of four reasons: the UPI AutoPay mandate request was not approved with your UPI PIN in time, the mandate limit is lower than the plan price, your card or bank blocks the transaction, or the checkout page itself glitched. Most cases are fixed by approving a fresh mandate in your UPI app, setting a high enough limit, or retrying on the website in a different browser. The nine fixes below are ordered from most to least common, and each one says whether it comes from official rules or from user reports.
This matters more than usual right now. OpenAI offered ChatGPT Go free for 12 months to users in India who signed up from 4 November 2025, so many of those free years end from November 2026, and the first paid renewal is when a payment problem shows up. If you are a developer, the second half of this guide covers other ways to pay for AI with UPI, without a monthly mandate.
- ₹399: ChatGPT Go per month in India, GST included. Plus is ₹1,999 and Pro is ₹19,900, as published in mid 2026.
- ₹15,000: the limit up to which RBI allows recurring debits without a PIN or OTP for each payment, once a mandate is set up
- 24 hours: minimum notice your bank must send before each recurring UPI debit, with an option to cancel
Why ChatGPT UPI payments fail: how AutoPay works
A ChatGPT subscription is a recurring payment, so paying with UPI is not a one time transfer. It creates a UPI AutoPay mandate, a standing permission for the merchant to debit up to a set amount on a schedule. Under the Reserve Bank of India's e-mandate rules:
- You must approve the mandate in your UPI app with your PIN when you set it up. This is called additional factor authentication.
- After that, recurring debits up to ₹15,000 can go through without a PIN or OTP each time. Debits above ₹15,000 generally still need authentication every time.
- Your bank or UPI app must notify you at least 24 hours before each debit, with the amount and a way to cancel.
Most "ChatGPT UPI payment was not approved" errors come from one of these steps not completing: the mandate request expired, the limit was too low, or the pre-debit step failed.
Match your error to the likely cause
Start with the row that matches what you see
| What you see | Likely cause | Try fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Payment was not approved" right after you tap Subscribe, before any QR or UPI request appears | Checkout or browser problem | 6, 7, 9 |
| Request reached your UPI app but expired | Mandate not approved in time | 1 |
| UPI app says amount exceeds the mandate limit | Mandate limit below the plan price | 2 |
| Plan worked for months, then renewal failed | Mandate paused or revoked, low balance, or bank limit | 3, 4 |
| Pro renewal fails every month on UPI | Amount above ₹15,000 needs authentication each time | 5 |
| Card payment declined | International or online use disabled on the card | 8 |
9 fixes for a ChatGPT UPI payment that is not working
Fix 1: Approve the mandate in your UPI app within the time limit
Official rule. When you choose UPI, ChatGPT sends a mandate request to your UPI ID or shows a QR code. Open your UPI app straight away, find the request (often under a pending or AutoPay section rather than the main payments screen) and approve it with your UPI PIN. Requests expire, and a request approved late will fail. If it expired, start the checkout again to get a fresh request.
Fix 2: Set the mandate limit at or above the plan price
Payment guide. A mandate is created with a maximum amount. If that maximum is below what ChatGPT charges, every debit fails. A widely cited India pricing guide notes that your UPI AutoPay limit must be at least ₹2,000 for ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999. When your UPI app shows the mandate for approval, check the amount before you enter your PIN.
Fix 3: Check the AutoPay section for paused, revoked or duplicate mandates
General UPI practice. Every major UPI app lists active mandates in an AutoPay or mandates section. If you paused or revoked the OpenAI mandate, renewals will fail. If you see several old, half created mandates for the same merchant, revoke the stale ones and create a single fresh one from ChatGPT's billing page.
Fix 4: Keep enough balance before the pre-debit date
Official rule. Your bank sends a pre-debit notice at least 24 hours before each renewal. Keep enough money in the linked account on that date, and do not tap cancel in that notification unless you mean to stop the plan. Daily UPI transaction limits set by your bank can also block a debit if you have already made large payments that day.
Fix 5: For ChatGPT Pro, expect to approve every renewal
Official rule. Pro costs ₹19,900, which is above the ₹15,000 limit for debits without authentication. That means each renewal generally needs you to approve it with a PIN or OTP. If you miss the prompt, the payment fails. A credit card is usually the smoother option for Pro.
Fix 6: Subscribe on the website, not inside the app store
Payment guide. Subscriptions started inside the iPhone or Android app are billed by Apple or Google, with their own payment methods, prices and errors. For the published rupee price and UPI, subscribe from chatgpt.com in a browser. If you already pay through an app store, manage or cancel it there, not on OpenAI's billing page.
Fix 7: Retry in a different browser with extensions off
User reports. When the error appears instantly with no QR code, the problem is often in the checkout page rather than UPI. Users on OpenAI's community forum report success after retrying in a private window or a different browser, without ad blockers or VPNs. In one July 2026 thread, the payment went through while the user was recording the browser session for support, with no clear reason. Treat this as a retry, not a guaranteed fix.
Fix 8: Enable international and online use on your card
Payment guide. If you switch to a debit or credit card, make sure online and international transactions are enabled in your bank app, since the merchant may be billed from outside India. Expect an OTP on the first payment. Credit cards may add a foreign transaction fee of about 2% to 3.5%.
Fix 9: Contact OpenAI support with a HAR file
Official support reply. If nothing works, email OpenAI support at [email protected]. In a July 2026 forum reply, OpenAI support asked a user with this exact error to send a HAR file, a recording of the browser's network activity that shows where checkout failed, and to share the case ID. Most browsers can save one from the developer tools Network tab. Do not post a HAR file publicly, because it can contain session tokens.
What we could not confirm: OpenAI's help pages do not publish a full list of UPI error codes for India, and we found no official statement on which UPI apps work best. Fixes marked "user reports" come from community threads and may not work for you. If your bank shows a specific decline reason, that reason is more reliable than anything general, including this guide.
Other ways to pay for AI with UPI
A subscription is not the only way to use AI models. If you are a developer, a student building projects, or someone who uses AI a few times a week, paying per use can be simpler and cheaper, and it avoids mandates entirely because you top up a prepaid balance.
How many messages ₹399 buys through an API
Assumes 800 input and 400 output tokens per message. Velona list prices as of 30 October 2026.
| Model | Messages for ₹399 |
|---|---|
| GPT-5 Nano | 19,471 |
| DeepSeek V4 Flash | 10,937 |
| GPT-5 Mini | 3,893 |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | 695 |
An API gives you the model, not the ChatGPT app. Features such as memory, voice mode, image generation, file uploads in the app and connected apps are part of the subscription, and you would need to build or skip them.
So which is right for you? Be honest about how you use AI:
| If this is you | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Daily chat, voice, images and files You want the full app experience | Keep the subscription Fix the mandate with the steps above |
| You write code or build apps You need an API key anyway | Pay per use with UPI Prepaid balance, no mandate |
| Light use, a few questions a week A subscription sits idle | Pay per use or a lower plan Compare your real monthly usage |

How to pay for an AI API with UPI
For developers, the simplest route is a prepaid wallet in rupees. You top up with any UPI app, the balance is spent as you call models, and there is nothing to renew. Velona works this way: one account and one API key for GPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and 300+ other models, top ups from ₹10, and prices shown in rupees. It uses the OpenAI compatible format, so the official openai SDK works with a changed base URL.
- Create an account. Sign up on velona.in with your email.
- Top up with UPI. Open the Wallet page, enter an amount from ₹10 and pay from any UPI app. It is a one time payment, not a mandate.
- Create an API key. Set a spending cap on the key so a bug in your code cannot drain the balance.
- Call a model. Point the
openaiSDK athttps://velona.in/v1and pick a model.
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(api_key="YOUR_VELONA_KEY", base_url="https://velona.in/v1")
reply = client.chat.completions.create(
model="openai/gpt-5-mini", # copy the exact model id from velona.in/models
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Explain UPI AutoPay in two lines."}],
)

Disclosure: Velona is our product. Here is how we checked this guide. The fixes rely on RBI's e-mandate rules as summarised by payment providers, a published India pricing guide for ChatGPT, and OpenAI community threads, all linked below. We are not affiliated with OpenAI. Message counts use Velona list prices on 30 October 2026 and the token sizes stated. Any OpenAI compatible provider that accepts UPI can be used the same way.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my ChatGPT UPI payment not working?
The most common causes are a UPI AutoPay mandate that was not approved with your PIN in time, a mandate limit lower than the plan price, a paused or revoked mandate, low balance on the debit date, or a checkout glitch in the browser. Approve a fresh mandate from chatgpt.com, check the amount, and retry in a different browser if the error appears instantly.
What does "ChatGPT UPI payment was not approved" mean?
It means the payment or mandate did not complete. If it appears before any UPI request reaches your phone, the problem is usually in the checkout page, so retry in another browser or contact OpenAI support with a HAR file. If the request reached your UPI app, it may have expired or been declined by your bank.
Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus with UPI in India?
Yes. ChatGPT accepts UPI for subscriptions in India through a UPI AutoPay mandate. For Plus at ₹1,999 a month, set the mandate limit to at least ₹2,000. Prices were published with GST included as of mid 2026, so confirm the current price on the checkout page.
Why does my ChatGPT Pro UPI renewal fail every month?
Pro costs ₹19,900, above RBI's ₹15,000 limit for recurring debits without authentication. Each renewal generally needs you to approve it with a PIN or OTP, so a missed prompt means a failed payment. A credit card is usually smoother for Pro.
What happens when my free ChatGPT Go year ends?
OpenAI's 12 month ChatGPT Go offer for India began on 4 November 2025, so many free periods end from November 2026. If a payment method is on file, the plan is expected to renew at the regular price, ₹399 a month as published in 2026. Check your billing settings before the renewal date if you want to change or cancel.
Is there a way to pay for AI without a UPI mandate?
Yes, for API use. Prepaid services let you top up with a one time UPI payment and spend the balance as you use models. Velona, for example, accepts top ups from ₹10 and gives one API key for GPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and other models, priced in rupees.
Building with AI? Skip the mandate.
Top up with UPI from ₹10, pay only for what you use, and get one key for GPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and 300+ models. Get an API key with UPI
